chapters 5-6

 Chapter 5:

1. How does the first sentence tell us that the mood of this chapter will be very different than that of the previous chapter?  I think the mood of the story is probably lighter than the other story because there wont be a lot of dying.

2. What do the following plan to do after the war is over:

Kropp: clear out of the war and get drunk; he wont be able to get a job because he left school and wont be able to do anything else
Detering: go straight on back to harvesting
Haie: would grab a dame and jump straight to bed and become a nom-com

3. What does Muller try to make them realize about their goals?  Muller questions them in order to make them think that their goals may be unrealistic and make their goals a little more precise.

4. Why does Kropp feel that "The war has ruined us for everything?"  Kropp feels that there is no point in life because a lot of them soldiers are the ones who will go back to the work they left and the wives the left. However, for Kropp, nothing will be the same and he is no longer a youth.

5. How does Paul explain his close relationship with Kat?  Paul explains it by the goose chase they had together. Once they had caught the goose, they were sitting there with no common interest but the war and sat their with an intimate feeling of closeness that they dont even speak.

Chapter 6:

1. How does the first paragraph of this chapter indicate that the mood of this chapter will be different than the previous one?  The mood is different because they are now expecting deaths to come and it will not be an unusual thing to happen; the deaths.

2. The front was referred to as a whirlpool.  What does Paul call it now?  It is a cage in which they must await fearfully whatever may happen.

3. Why is "Chance" capitalized?  Chance is capitalized because its a thing that most men want and that it is something that is alive. It is also hanging over their heads, ready to come and take them; like God.

4. What does the incident about rats say about how man compares to the animals?  Man is as vicious as the animals when he wants to be and that they will kill anything that gets in their way.

5. How do new recruits react to their first combat?  They dont know what to do with their bayonets so they are just little guys on the battlefield getting killed because they dont know how to protect themselves.
